Writing Samples

I wrote these articles for a Travel Reporting course I took when I studied abroad in Florence.

Article, Travel Reporting, May 2023

We had creative freedom as long as we followed assignment guidelines, so for this article I used the language and tone of popular food travel blogs.  My intended audience was the tourist in Italy looking to learn more about the country's cuisine. The wording is a bit exaggerated, but I had a lot of fun writing it. I am also a big truffle fan, so it was very interesting to research this topic and learn all about the types of truffles and where they come from. I used different colors for the headers and periodically changed the way the text faced to make the article more interesting to look at and to break up the text.

I followed a similar style of writing for this article, keeping with the theme of a travel blog. My intended audience this time was the tourist visiting Florence and looking to learn about its iconic landmarks. This was one of my favorite articles to write because I got to learn about the history of a piece of architecture I walked across every day. The people I interviewed were incredibly knowledgeable and gave me some quotes that I was really excited to include. I was also able to add a video of a street performer to the article to spice up the writing.

Celebrate the Centennial and Help Preserve Coral Gables History

I wrote this article in my internship this past summer about the City of Coral Gables' 100th anniversary celebrations. It was published in the city's magazine, Gables Living. The purpose of the article was to inform residents about the centennial and to request historical items for the city's archives in honor of the occasion. The language I used was more straightforward and mainstream as this was not a creative piece and I wanted to be consistent with the city's branding. I was not in charge of the formatting or the photos used, but I feel that the pictures chosen match the theme of the article and help showcase the city's history.

HSA  Newsletter

This is one of the newsletters I wrote during my time as Newsletter Director for the Hispanic Student Association. I chose to use blue for the text as it was one of HSA's colors and that specific shade of blue was used in many of our promotional materials. I highlighted important dates, times and locations in blue so they would stand out and people would remember them. I always included the "Meme of the Week" because it was a good way to engage our readers, and I even had some people tell me they opened the newsletter every week just to see what meme I had used. I used memes in Spanish as the primary audience was Hispanic and it made sense for the organization. The tone of the language I utilized was playful and humorous. The intended audience was primarily college students and I found they responded well when the language was more relatable.

Press Release

I wrote this press release during my internship last summer. The purpose was to announce the new Assistant City Attorney and give a brief explanation of his background and qualifications. This press release was sent to all the city employees and residents, so I used professional language and tone. I followed the standard formatting for City of Coral Gables press releases.
